Couples & POLYCULES.
When it comes to the couples who seek our help, we hear these kinds of things a lot:
Maybe you find some of them familiar.
You have trouble communicating about sex and intimacy.
When you try to talk about your issues, conversations get stuck or go in circles and leave one or more of you feeling hurt, confused, and unheard.
You’re tentative initiating sex, because you’re so tired and vulnerable from being turned down by your partner in the past.
You’re worried your partner is going to make a move, and you don’t want to turn them down…again.
Conversations around sex are fraught, and you both feel stuck.
Our therapists have undergone advanced training in order to help you deal with challenges exactly like these.
In relationships, we tend to encounter the same problems over and over with little insight into how to change our patterns. When this occurs, there tends to be distance or emptiness in the relationship, pervasive feelings of anger, or resentment, and, thus, a lack of interest in physical affection or a physical relationship with one another.
We work with couples and those in other relationship configurations to break out of repetitive patterns by helping them gain insight, improve communication, enhance intimacy and improve discrepancies in sexual desire.
How does couple’s therapy actually help?
Couples and multi-partner therapy creates a time and place for difficult conversations, so they don’t have to take up space in your busy, day-to-day lives. Your therapist will create an environment in which it feels safe to face the most challenging and taboo subjects: sex, intimacy, money, and unprocessed events from the past that weigh on your relationship.
Therapy provides a place where you each feel heard and understood, and space is held for your feelings and perspective.
With each person feeling held and supported, we’re able to redirect conversations from defensive reactions to fruitful, relevant content that moves the conversation forward.
What happens in therapy?
We begin by meeting with everyone together to build trust and find out what the relational issues are.
Then we do individual sessions to see each person’s unique perspective of the situation.
Then we come back together, make a plan for treatment (shared goals), and begin the work.
The work can consist of: sharing parts of your past that are contributing to the now, taking accountability for/honoring past relationship hurts, homework outside of session. . . you name it, there are many interventions we can put in place.
We help you construct a different way of dialoguing so that you don’t get stuck in defensive looping where conversations stay stale.
We help you honor your past, so that you can be informed about how it influences the way you show up in your relationship now.
We help you build a “couple bubble” so that when you and your partner interact with challenging people or situations, you have a roadmap of how to care for one another.
